Special Needs Families

Spreading a Little Hope

For Special Needs Families

When my youngest child left for college, I needed to find a place to plug in—somewhere to serve.  The health and wellness industry is where I turned.  I am a “foodie” and I am fascinated by how every morsel of food that we eat affects our body and brain. When I became an empty nester, I went back to school, studied holistic nutrition, and graduated from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition with a certification in health coaching.  I also completed a digestive intensive course with Andrea Nakayama, a functional nutritionist. I quickly became motivated to help others.

I have watched my daughter Hope struggle with weight issues, skin issues and an autoimmune disease.  All of these experiences have motivated me to focus, not only on changes to the foods we eat, but also lifestyle changes. Hope’s struggle is ongoing, but education is key.  Knowledge can be so powerful.  I’ve made many mistakes as a mom and want to share the lessons I’ve learned along this journey.

As a health coach, my desire is to educate, support and empower special needs families to enjoy optimal health through consuming whole foods, making lifestyle changes and using natural solutions. Equipping individuals with intellectual disabilities to make healthy decisions in every area of their lives starts at home with a family commitment and hard work. As a parent, our goal is for our children to become as independent as possible.  My goal is to encourage and support you along this journey.

Spreading A Little Hope began as a blog—a way for me to journal my daughter’s journey through college and down the road to independence and the struggles and joys along the way.  Now, Spreading A Little Hope has become a way for me to serve others by sharing, educating, and empowering them to become the best versions of themselves.

Testimonials

Since my husband and I are both educators, we knew from the time our daughter Trista was born, the importance of education. We immersed ourselves in reading as many books on brain development and early childhood education.  We worked very hard on her intellectual and speech development in order to  close as many gaps as possible.
It was not until Trista became an adult that we realized we did not educate her in healthy eating and awareness.
She had no concept of portion control, good and bad eating habits, nor the importance of being active.
Thankfully in 2013, Jenny Banks selflessly took the time to teach Trista everything we neglected to teach her. She incorporated weekly exercise into Trista’s routine. She cooked healthy meals with her and taught her the importance of certain foods. She was able to get Trista to see the importance of drinking water frequently.  It was absolutely wonderful to watch Trista’s transformation and the ripple effects of seeing Trista become healthier inspired me to make changes as well. Jenny coached me on personal changes I needed to make- including introducing me to using a Nutribullet to make smoothies and get my daily nutrients via some of her recipes.      The process for Trista took about a year of intermittent teaching, modeling and reminders. What was the ultimate result?  Trista is now “my” coach on what I should eat and not eat. She eats a salad AT least once a day (something she wouldn’t entertain at ALL from age 2-22).  Her primary drink now- WATER!  Prior to Jenny’s teachings, Trista’s primary drink was sweet iced tea.  She is religious about doing Hip Hop classes twice a week and Crossfit 2-3 times a week. She no longer sits at the table and overeats. She understands the give and take of good and bad food decisions AND she has a portion control mentality.
Jenny, thank you for changing Trista’s life and making her healthier.  While I could cover teaching her academics and social skills, I did not have the knowledge nor motivation to teach her such necessary life skills.  You have a sweet, calm method of presenting the ideas and information to her that she was willing to try what you asked.  Your skills and passion for making our children aware and healthy shines through in every interaction.

Much love and thanks,

ReBecca Kutcher
